Committed to sustainability
Sustainability
Our comprehensive approach to sustainability
Our approach to sustainability goes much further than natural refrigerant solutions. It encompasses people, planet and production by focusing on achieving business sustainability for our customers, our staff and our business. We are constantly working to minimise our own carbon footprint and to advise our clients on how to minimise theirs. Our focus in on having the latest tools and objectives to continuously improve our sustainability efforts.
Sustainability certifications
Environmental Sustainability - ISO 14001 certified
With engineering offices across New Zealand, as one of the country’s largest industrial refrigeration providers, we recognise the impact energy usage can have on our world and thus strive to provide our clients with solutions which not only meet their needs, but also minimise their environmental footprint.
Our desire to care for the planet, the environment and society, guided us towards a programme of environmental sustainability, with projects as innovative as the reuse of defrost water, the use of geothermal energy as a heat source for the Christchurch Town Hall and the movement away from CFCs towards natural refrigerants such as ammonia and CO2.

Environment ISO 14001 Certification
The drive towards a cleaner, more efficient environment led us to gain ISO 14001 (Environmental Management System) certification in 2016, winning the EECA Award for excellence and innovation in renewable energy, and the Infrastructure/Trade award at the Champion Canterbury Business Awards for our commitment to the environment and innovation.
What matters most
Reducing environmental impact with sustainable refrigeration
Sustainability isn’t just a goal; it’s a responsibility. The refrigeration and HVAC industry faces two major environmental challenges: unsustainable refrigerant gases and excessive energy consumption. Our expert solutions tackle both, helping clients reduce their carbon footprint while optimising long-term costs.

Cutting down global warming gases
Many traditional refrigerants, such as Freon and HFCs, contribute to global warming. Active Refrigeration is leading the shift to natural alternatives, including Ammonia, CO₂, and Propane. These options require expert handling, but our experience ensures safe and cost-effective integration. With government taxes increasing the cost of unsustainable refrigerants, switching to sustainable options is not just better for the environment but also a smarter choice for businesses.

Optimising energy efficiency
A well-designed refrigeration system isn’t just about cooling; it’s about efficiency. Cutting corners with smaller, cheaper systems may save on upfront costs, but they often result in higher energy consumption, frequent breakdowns, and increased maintenance expenses over time. Our team excels at balancing CAPEX (initial spend) and OPEX (ongoing operating costs), tailoring solutions to each client’s specific needs. By designing energy-efficient, long-lasting refrigeration systems, we help businesses minimise waste, reduce emissions, and lower operating costs.

Committed to a greener future
Sustainability is a core focus, both in operations and in the solutions delivered. Active Refrigeration continuously reduces its environmental impact through energy-efficient practices and responsible waste management while helping clients make sustainable choices. With the right expertise, efficiency and sustainability work together, driving industry-wide progress without compromising reliability or performance.
