Why become an apprentice at Active Refrigeration?

As an Active Refrigeration apprentice, you’ll gain hands-on experience in the installation, maintenance, and servicing of industrial and commercial refrigeration and HVAC systems. You’ll work alongside experienced engineers and technicians, learning everything from pipework and electrical controls to natural refrigerants like Ammonia, CO₂, and Propane.

Throughout your apprenticeship, you’ll develop problem-solving skills, technical expertise, and industry knowledge, while working on real-world projects across a variety of industries, including dairy, meat processing, cold storage, and food production. You’ll also complete the New Zealand Certificate in Refrigeration & Air Conditioning, setting you up for a successful career in the industry.

What skills are required for this role?

As an Active Refrigeration apprentice, you don’t need prior industry experience, but a strong work ethic, problem-solving mindset, and willingness to learn are essential. You should have an interest in mechanical, electrical, and refrigeration systems, along with basic math and technical skills for measurements and calculations.

Since this is a hands-on role, being comfortable working with tools, at heights, or in confined spaces is important, as well as having a strong focus on health and safety practices. Good communication and teamwork skills will help you succeed, as you’ll be working closely with experienced technicians, engineers, and clients. What qualifications are required for this role?

To become an Active Refrigeration apprentice, you don’t need formal qualifications to start, but a keen interest in mechanical, electrical, and refrigeration systems is essential. A New Zealand Certificate in Refrigeration & Air Conditioning (Trade Qualification) is required to become a fully qualified technician, and we support our apprentices in completing this throughout their training.

A restricted or full driver’s licence is often preferred, as the role may involve travel to different job sites. You’ll also need to meet health and safety requirements, which may include obtaining a Site Safe certificate or similar workplace safety training. Most importantly, we’re looking for motivated, hands-on learners who are eager to build a long-term career in the refrigeration and HVAC industry.
